Comfort Zone

about

This is a song I wrote back in 2019. I wrote it at the piano and it lived as a voice memo with no demo for years. I played it on stage during the tour for Shadowdancer and people seem to always request it but it lived mostly in my head and on that iPhone as a voice memo.

I thought about releasing the original iPhone demo but it felt a little cheap. So over break I hooked up the piano in my studio and finally just recorded it live with no click. I had my buddy Justin Cho come over and engineer the vocals because he's a brilliant engineer. Then we added some touches to the song in his studio in SW Atlanta.

Justin went on a mixed the song and it was done very fast.

The background of the lyrics has always been interesting to me. I wrote it pre pandemic, but it's a song about romantic isolation. In my head I was writing this story about two people who live in the same apartment complex. They're both lonely but too shy to talk to each other so they stay isolated. Later on I realized I was subconsciously remembering the plot of a movie I saw in high school: "Let the Right One In" it's a cult classic vampire movie that's not so much scary as it is kind of touching. If you've seen the movie you'll get why this fits the lyrics.

The song is obviously open to interpretation but I think I never put it out because it was a little too 'pop' sounding, like it was a straightforward romantic ballad. Like how do you produce that? Just add drums and strings? Somehow that felt wrong. But when I remembered the subconscious channeling of the film, I found a new inspiration: eeriness. Justin and I started experimenting with sounds traditionally reserved for horror films inspired by Mark Koven, a composer who works with Robert Eggers. We used strings, metal scrapes and gongs gently sprinkled in the background of the track.

The way I see it, it's up to you: if you want this to be your romantic piano ballad about unrequited love, then ignore all the weird vampire shit. But if you want to, rewatch Let the Right One In (the Swedish version) and see if the song doesn't take on a stranger meaning.

Lastly, I just want to say thanks for checking this out. I'm releasing this song early on Bandcamp so it can go live on Valentine's Day. It will eventually hit streamers but if you want to support what I do you can purchase the song via my Bandcamp page for as little as $1. If you do so I'll enter your name into a raffle to win a free piece of merch from my store. I make all my own merch here in Atlanta so I can do any size/style you like if you want some apparel, or feel free to pick a vinyl.

thanks so much and enjoy Comfort Zone!

lyrics

we’ve got the same sense of humor
we both love staying inside
calling our meals from the uber
dressing just to be polite

so when I work out how to get you
behind these walls I’ve made so world-proof
I’d finally work out how to tell you
we got to get out of our comfort zone

just take it slow
don't meditate on it
baby I know how it feels
What those lonely nights reveal
Don't make a case for it
Baby wait for it
and I won't say bad thoughts
Will leave us alone
No I won't
Let's get out of our Comfort Zone

We’ve got the same of timing
never get caught crossing wires
I always have something to tell you
Like there’s always a race in my mind

so when I work out how to get you
behind these walls I’ve made so world-proof
I’d finally work out how to tell you
we got to get out of our comfort zone

just take it slow
don't meditate on it
baby I know how it feels
What those lonely nights reveal
Don't make a case for it
Baby wait for it
and I won't say bad thoughts
Will leave us alone
No I won't
Let's get out of our Comfort Zone
